Students fundraise for World Aids Day

A group of Bournemouth University students were raising money as part of World AIDS Day today at BU’s student centre.

The fundraising gave students an opportunity to show support and solidarity with those who are living with HIV, whilst raising money for Dorset based charity, Body Positive.

Event coordinator, Alison Sharma said: “It is really important that we fundraise because the charity relies on donations that help people get tested, which is the best way to prevent aids from spreading.”

World AIDS day is held on the 1st December every year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV.

With over 100,000 people living with HIV in the UK, World AIDS day is vital in raising money, increasing awareness and improving education on the topic.

The event at BU encouraged students to take a ribbon or wristband, donate to the charity and volunteer to help the organisation.

Alison said: “There is still a lot of negative stereotyping when it comes to aids, even today some people said they didn’t want to be associated with us, so these events are hugely important.”

She added: “The charity is only allowed to fundraise on World AIDS Day and Body Positive Day in March, so coming here today is very important to us.”
